I thought they had such a lovely relationship.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2019 Why can’t Stephen King write an engaging novel without unnecessary cruelty and gratuitous violence? This turns out to be the first book in a trilogy, and I’ve already picked up the second, "Finder’s Keepers," with the third due out in mid-2016. This is written in the vein of Misery or Duma Key - plenty of suspense. Just more senseless violence. A retired detective, bored and alone.....pitted against a fiendishly clever mass murdere who has a mother fixation. To get the free app, enter your mobile phone number. Jerome, Hodges, and Holly manage to uncover Hartsfield's real identity and search his computer hard drives. In a high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from murdering thousands. Hodges (who had been saved by concert staff), Holly, and Jerome have a picnic to discuss the recently transpired events. UPDATE: Stephen has further clarified what Constant Readers can expect from the Mr. Mercedes Trilogy. If, however, you like a variety of genres and enjoy a good detective story, then this is the book for you. This is one of those books. Great stuff! I'm so glad I did, I really enjoyed it - likeable characters, a beastly villain, great plot, nailbiting denouement. If you are enjoying the ATT Mini-Series, Mr. Mercedes, you will love this. I was always a big Stephen King fan in my teens and twenties but I seemed to lose interest around the time of Needful Things so it was several years before I picked up another novel by this outstanding teller of great tales. What I got instead was a fast-paced and enjoyable thriller. I trust Mr. de Lint’s tastes, so when he praised "Mr. Mercedes" and its follow-up, I figured I’d give them a try. In a high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. They eventually deduce that Hartsfield's target is the concert, and the trio rush to the concert venue to stop him. The entire book kept me wondering what was going to happen next, and I loved all of the characters, even if I must admit that they were a bit cliched at times if I'm being perfectly honest. There are plenty of other pop-culture references in the minds of the various characters that do well to establish their ages and backgrounds. Mr. Mercedes is Stephen’s first “hard-boiled detective tale.” It will transport you into a vibrant and dangerous world filled with gritty characters living on the bleeding edge of reason. King is as good as he ever was with respect to his characters and plotting, and he’s always great with the gross-out scenes (which here are not too many, thankfully). Then there are those books that are so well-crafted, not just with character development or storytelling but in the writing itself. There are numerous differences, even major changes, but if you're a Stephen King Fan, you'll love both the book and the movie. The people become real with quirks and qualms I've always given Stephen King credit as the "king of the flashback" and here he gives us some of what he does best, but he also shows again his ability to get inside the head of the character in the present. Really laugh out loud in places, and very clever writing. Hodges begins to suffer a heart attack and is unable to venture into the concert with Holly and Jerome, but urges them to press on. I hope not. Stephen King has a brilliant writing style that is immediately identifiable but over the years I think he decided to experiment with different styles which just didn't suit me. Well, they must have done, for me to have read a 400 page book in a day. It was published on June 3, 2014. Doing so allowed me to get a broader view of the story as a whole. 11.22.63 got me back into his novels and I've now just finished Mr Mercedes. This is it. Then you can start reading Kindle books on your smartphone, tablet, or computer - no Kindle device required. Whatever genre he writes in, King pretty much always brings it. I used to look forward to reading each new Stephen King novel with the deep interrogation of what happens to ordinarily good people when extraordinarily bad things happen to them. A brilliant tale of cat and mouse with plenty of twists..I found it very hard to put down and get on with all my jobs! A thriller, where he's mostly known for doing horror? Now to read the second book. But fans need not be disappointed as all King's usual devices are there, with the bringing together of weird yet totally relatable characters and a strong story. Some books I rate with 5 stars just because of my pleasure in the story.
I wondered in the beginning of the book if King was making a game in paying homage to himself with hints he dropped to reference some of his previous best sellers, but he played this game for just a short while.
