There aren't really any demented polar bears in the Icelandic fjord that doubles as the home of the Arctic thriller - but there's plenty of spectacular sceneryFortitude is supposed to be in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago halfway between the mainland and the North Pole, but the snowy town at the heart of Sky’s sci-fi thriller is actually in East Iceland. It’s called Reydarfjordur and it sits on a dramatic fjord surrounded by mountains. Please see our Fortitude is set in the eponymous town, which is a fictional settlement in the Svalbard area of Norway. The summary reads: “The dark drama series set in the melting Arctic, featuring psychological and thriller elements, tells the story of the small idyllic town of Fortitude, whose peaceful existence is shattered after a brutal and shocking murder.“Above-average temperatures lead to a record ice melt revealing secrets long since hidden beneath the frozen landscape.”“The parasite threat from season one has gone, but the residents are still fleeing the Arctic town in droves.“Cut off from the mainland, those who remain in Fortitude battle on.“However, in the wilderness, nature is growing restless and unpredictable.”The fictional town of Fortitude has residents from across the world, allowing them to cast big international actors like the British Gambon, American Dennis Quaid and the Danish Sofie Gråbøl from classic Scandi-noir The Killing.Despite being set in Norway, Fortitude is filmed in the town of Reyðarfjörður, Iceland and in the UK.The town is on the edge of an Icelandic fjord and is surrounded by mountains, allowing the Fortitude crew to shoot some breathtaking landscape shots. The bar from Fortitude with its neon fox sign is actually a real bar and coffee shop called Kaffi Kasg (Kasg’s Coffee). While shooting in Iceland, some cast and crew actually stayed in the small town’s guesthouse.According to the Radio Times, when they came to shoot Fortitude season one, they actually had to import snow into the town and use fake snow due to sunnier weather conditions than expected. Some locations from the show like the mayor’s office are not really in Reyðarfjörður and were actually filmed in a London studio. However, some scenes that you may think must have been filmed in a studio were actually filmed on location. For example, Governor Hildur Odegard’s (Sofie Gråbøl) swim in the freezing fjord in series two really saw the actress having to go into the icy water.
