This review is not about the camping facilities, but rather about the perfect place to park and start your hike into the John Muir wilderness. whereas everyone and their mother was on the hike to Kearsarge pass.It was just a place to take a break in our trip up to Mammoth but the Onion Valley Campground is the launch point to three trails - all appropriate for rewarding day hikes.Went up the hill for the weekend. We packed and planned for 40-60 degree weather like the forecasts showed and ended up with 18-35 degree weather, a huge snow storm and 65mph winds that broke the tent.
The temperature at Onion Valley Campground can be a little tricky though. The Kearsage Pass Trailhead is also 1/4 mile from the campground. The views from #14 were fantastic, we were able to have full view of the mountains from our picnic table. Overall, the campground was fairly quiet during my stay.We are in Independence California for July 4 and decided to take the drive up the onion Valley. The campground is at 9,200 feet and sits at the trail head to the Kearsarge Pass. This year the Camp Host is James.
Onion Valley Campground is located at Winnemucca, NV 89445. His Job is to take care of the campground. Opening and closing dates may be dependent on weather conditions. That might scare some folks but doesn't bother me.Looking for a place to camp in the eastern Sierras and Whitney Portal is full? Beautiful lakes for your lunch about 2 miles up. He is friendly, knowledgable and helpful. He really is a great guy that just made this place more amazing. We returned again this year, staying from 6/19-6/21, as always this places is great. This is the last site in the campground loop.

It was like looking at a Japanese Zen Garden. We ate like ravenous animals and could not have been more grateful! I thought I had died and gone to heaven! Made it over Glen Pass to a great camp spot at Rae Lakes.
