"Opae" is the Hawaiian word for "shrimp," and "ka'a" means "rolling." But watch your footing, it’s crazy muddy and overgrown. That is something to determine for yourself.Bad idea!
Opeakaa Falls is located in Wailua, the land of the ali’i (kings) . Ample parking and small sidewalk offers safe viewing of the falls and a view of Wailua River … The trail is supposedly all on state-owned land, but it is not maintained.
The view is generally clear from that side, but the vegetation on the north end of the lookout obstructs the view. Head up Kuamo'o Road until you see a pullout for Opaeka'a Falls on your right, shortly before the second-mile marker. I believe “Opaeka’a” means “rolling shrimp” probably because there used to be the rare native shrimp in the freshwater streams here. These shrimp were known to be able to climb cliffs containing waterfalls such as this one.Now even though the overlook was very popular and busy, it left a lot to be desired. This was due to its very distant and partially obstructed view thanks to a tree that covered up a good chunk of the falls. Thus, we definitely shared this overlook with many other tourists as it was a very popular stop.

It is a little steep and slippery but stays right next to the fence. All five of these spots are in great locations but each one is a little different.
I had visited the falls 3 times before he confronted me, not knowing I was trespassing, as I just went over the fence on the side of the road. Once on island, the falls can be accessed by Route 580. It becomes steep again but half way you will find a rope that helps you down the hill to the bottom of the fall. Visitors can view the beautiful falls just from the side of the highway, or if they are daring enough, they can take the trek down to enjoy it up close. This is my Opaekaa Falls is one of the most popular spots for tourists to visit when they come to Kauai. The trail has been closed indefinitely. You will climb over boulders in the stream and on top of branches of fallen trees. It’s WAY to steep of a descent before the ropes. You'll be looking for Kuamo'o Road (Highway 580) on the mauka side of the highway. Once the ropes end it is almost impossible to climb. I think it’s probably best to be respectful, and skip this one.I think the warnings for the Opaeka’a hike are reasonable and appreciated. There is ample parking and restrooms. I hiked all over Kauai for over a month and documented all of my adventures. As someone who has hiked different trails all over the world, I wouldn’t put this in the difficult category. Trail appears to be closed. However, most tourists just stop in the parking lot and watch the falls from a distance. Opaekaa Falls. The falls are at their best in full sunlight (late morning usually).
