At this point, I think I’ve skimmed off much of the cream, having read several of his undisputed classics (I don’t read a lot of horror, so it’s taken me a bit longer than most to recognize the genius of Stephen King. I read Salem's Lot for the first time in the 1970s. There is a Witches series by Anne Rice that is long, kindMaybe some Shirley Jackson: "Welcome to Hill House" or some Richard Matheson: "I Am Legend." I just wrote a review and lost it, and then there's the *other* issue.Well this is annoying times two. He learns on arrival that the creepy, empty house he was hoping to rent (this house has a strong connection to an episode during the writer's childhood), has already been let to two mysterious men. - and we'll talk about vampires here in the dim. Having read the original the day it came out (I literally could not put it down), I was just a bit disappointed when my Kindle version arrived with all kinds of amendments, editor's notes, and addendum. The town of 'Salems Lot is a small, sleepy town in Maine.
It's a slow burner, that ratchets up the tension. Good read.
The audio version is also excellent, narrated by Ron McClarty. One last point to make, watch the first Salem's Lot miniseries with David Soul, it scared the bejaysus out of me. It stands up well as a story, not too dated despite more recent developments in vampire stories. This might be a long book but my goodness is it worth the read.

I always have a hard time enjoying vampire novels and I definitely think that stems from my love of this book.

King doesn't shy away from the fact that vampires are creatures of horror and he presents them as such. As one would expect from King, it’s a scary book. I was a bit of a wimp before I entered my teen years...so I stayed away from anything vampire. I get so caught up in the story and I still get shivers when I get to the final show down! I find new things I missed, I view things from a different perspective. I don't know, but why can't they both be equally horrifying?Stephen King's take on vampires.

This book frightened me to death. People in the town avoid the "Marsten House" as a man once killed his wife there and then committed suicide there by hanging himself.
