The same year saw Toyama Glass Art Museum in Toyama, Japan commission permanent installations of Chihuly’s artwork to feature within the new 27,000 square metre cultural complex designed by architect Kengo Kuma. Since 1967 Chihuly has exhibited internationally, from Brazil to New Zealand and from Iceland to Japan. Truly amazing experience. We would recommend this to anyone visiting Seattle. His only brother, George Chihuly, died in a Navy aviation training accident in Pensacola, Florida, and a couple of years later, his father died of a heart attack.

Chihuly’s second exhibition at Halcyon Gallery, Dale Chihuly: Beyond the Object opened in London in February 2014. It is conceived on a grand scale, with monumental outdoor installations of his signature ‘Chandeliers’, ‘Towers’ and ‘Reeds’, a sizable exhibition hall and a bespoke glasshouse of some 400 square metres displaying an immense suspended sculpture of around 2,000 elements in shades of oxblood red, orange, amber and citron yellow. I had seen the stunning works of glass at the Biltmore several years ago and thought the exhibit would be worth my time.
