Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe, the Catholic proto-martyr of Uganda, was declared “Blessed” by Pope Benedict XV in 1920 together with twenty-one fellow martyrs. Balikuddembe was a personal attendant on King Mutesa I and Majordomo under King Mwanga II. Along with Lwanga and his companions, Mukasa Balikuddembe was beatified in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV and canonized on October 18, 1964, by Pope Paul VI.
