The conservationist William Hornaday and his 1886 mission to hunt what he believes are the last surviving buffalo play an important supporting role in the story. "The High Divide" is the story of a man with a past, a past that he is embarrassed to share with his wife and sons, a past that haunts him so continuously and so badly that he is compelled to find a way to make things right - or die trying. It is nevertheless a work of fiction and one for the reader to become immersed in. Something went wrong. It's a fairly interesting subject and a great setting. I loved this story and its characters. Just finished third book in the Jade Harrington series. So from the beginning I was more than a little angry at Ulysses. So up until now, Peace Like a River by Leif Enger has been one of my favorite books, but now his brother Lin comes across with this one that is right up there next to it. Please try again. With no one really knowing where Ulysses went or why, it's pretty amazing that they all head in the same direction, but they do. I struggled through the first half before deciding that whatever the deep dark secrets were, was not worth my time and effort.I enjoyed this book from start to finish. The boys, especially, deserve more page time. His stories have been published in literary journals such as Glimmer Train, Ascent, and American Fiction. This just didn't seem like the end. I figured out most things along the way,but never once did I think it would end like it did....! I didn't find the wife very sympathetic (despite her bad lot) and didn't care much for the husband.
